Dr. Jan McLean

Dr. Jan McLean has been an educator and administrator for more than 33 years at museums across the country. Dr. McLean is known for generously sharing her expertise in strategic planning and educational programming, curatorial planning and collections care, exhibit and gallery development, fund raising and capital projects and planetarium programs. In addition to developing collaborative programs among museums from Cleveland to San Diego, she served on a team to evaluate the educational services of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum.

Dr. McLean directed the Education Departments at both the San Diego Natural History Museum and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. She also served as Executive Director and CEO at both the Museum of Western Colorado and the Museum for Northeast Michigan.

As an educator, Dr. McLean is known for her outstanding educational programming for museum members, schools, and the general community with a diverse constituency. These include model volunteer docent programs operating within the museum and beyond-the-walls, with a special emphasis on serving physically challenged visitors.

In addition, Dr. McLean developed a new Discovery Center for natural sciences; an innovative Naturalist Center for inquiry-based learning; a Teacher’s Resource Center with a lending library; teacher enhancement seminars; curriculum-based school programs, public classroom courses, local field trips and a travel program. She has created partnerships with community businesses, colleges, and other not-for-profit private institutions, and worked closely with curators and exhibitions staff to develop new exhibits.

Dr. McLean and her staff planned the public face and educational programs for a new Hall of Earth and Planetary Exploration at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and The Hall of Desert Ecology at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Jan and her staff augmented traveling exhibitions by creating fresh public and school programming for blockbuster and in-house exhibitions.
Other successes include: AAM re-accreditations; endowment programs; successful organizational planning and mission reevaluation, institutional strategic plans; capital campaigns; and disaster preparedness plans, as well as policies for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Jan’s service on not-for-profit boards of trustees includes the San Diego and Northeast Ohio International Science fairs, the San Diego County Schools Education Board, and the Moebius Nature Center.

Dr. McLean is an avid hiker, birder, reader and traveler and enjoys the mountains of Colorado.
